I can't imagine giving up my child to an institution (heck, I didn't even send mine to institutionalized schools for years!). The only acception would be if the child needed so much medical care that it could not be provided in my home. (and this is coming from someone who never wanted kids and was repulsed by babies!) (hated pregnancy and childbirth too!)
I wonder how many people's lives were thrown away? The "experts" do not hold all of the keys, or the knowlege. The family unit is the basic unit of society and the best place for nurturing a child. I know a family who lives their lives 24/7 for their little boy who will probably never talk, walk or communicate with them. He has cerebral palsy and they work with him everyday with all sorts of therapy that they have taught themselves. They say he is their joy. They do not even see him as a burden. He is their son/brother. He has taught the family members more than they could ever teach him. If only every child were treasured like this.
Right here, right now; this is where it's at.
