TMS and autism

Postby goddessoflubbock on Thu Feb 11, 2010 5:42 am

I follow John Elder Robison on Twitter and Facebook, I read his book "Look Me In The Eye" about his discovery of having Asperger's and his life which was pretty fascinating.

He posted this link and I was wondering if anyone else was more familiar with this:

I'm not certain how many labs around the country are involved in rTMS trials, but I know that Manny's was pretty much the first to start it.

(Actually, it was the TMS media article which was how we met, since he was horribly misquoted about "eradicating autism" and AFF got wind of it, someone invited him to the forum to defend himself, we met and started chatting and the rest is history. :) )

But yes, low frequency rTMS seems to do well in alleviating some problem traits of ASC. I can explain how the method works if you like, although I may save that for later this afternoon when my brain is a little more... brainy?

I pretty much caught the basics from the various videos, which is about all my brain is capable of handling anymore it seems.

I could not remember if this was the same thing as Manny was doing or not. Chalk that up to short term memory deficits ;)

Dang, well I forgot to post about it in the midst of all my evil exam studying and now am about to be off to the theatre this evening. So I will definitely write about it tomorrow! :D

Ay ay ay... I had sent the blog link to Manny in email and that started off one of his rants, causing a right bad mood. :? Manny was the first to figure this all out and to implement it, and also has the most publications on it. However, others thought it was brilliant and have done an excellent job stealing it from him, blocking him from getting further grants for studying the effects. Including Harvard.

Well that sucks

I'm all for competition and having lots of good brains working on a problem, but I also think the person who first came up with the idea should have first dibs, so to speak. Could Manny not patent it or some other legal protection of his idea?

I don't think so. It's not as though he invented the TMS. And Science is about replication of study, so in a way it's good other people are also trying it. However, some of those people have been on grant reviews and when he's submitted grants for it, they've refused because they wanted the money for themselves.
