Good grief. It'd be nice if someone would try to hold that water in Texas. Then over half the babies born here wouldn't be US citizens... Why would that guy from Jersey even raise the issue? Silly really. Unless, like I said, he wants to relocate....

You got me with that one - I had to recheck the article to see where he was from. I was certain the guy was from the US, and when you put Jersey and wanting to relocate I started to think did I make an error and the person was from Jersey (in the Channel Islands).

Sorry. New Jersey has the distinction of being the only state here with two names but called by only one (no one would call New York just York - everyone would think England...LOL)

And the name of the thread is a bit misleading is well. No one ever said Obama wasn't born in the US. Although for a moment there I was taxing my brain determining his age, deducting that from 2008, because it is a close call to when Hawaii became a state in 1959 - I think Hawaii was only 3 or 4 years into statehood when he was born....now THAT would have made for interesting news....

Perhaps it is because Boston (in England) is just a dump full of overweight (a couple of years ago it was officially the UK's fattest town) benefit seeking chavs, which is best forgotten about. Of course it is not entirely full of this, but enough...

BTW, Barack Hussein Obama, II was born on August 4, 1961, so he's 47 years old and Hawaii had been a state from August 21, 1959--almost two years before he was born, although he still would have been an American citizen if he had been born in Hawaii before it became a state since American citizenship has been granted to native born Hawaiians since it has been annexed to the US.

OMG - ok I happen to actually KNOW that attorney, and at the risk of him suing me (although truth is it's own defense) he's a jackass. (I used to work in the Phila legal community, was even a member of the Phila Bar Assoc).

Don't forget definitions of a "city" are different. For example, Boston in Lincolnshire has a population of over 35,000 which is more populated than about 96% of US cities. To be a city in the UK requires different criteria to be from the rest of the world. Actually, to be honest there is no criteria, and contrary to most people's beliefs in the UK a city does not have to have a cathedral. It is proclaimed by the monarch (and being a city gives no more benefits or power than being of town status), usually by way of special event commemoration. The last cities were proclaimed in honour of the Queen's golden jubilee in 2002, and before that it was in the Millennium. Only 14 cities have been declared in the last 50 years (half of them in the 2000 and 2002 decrees), and there is only 66 in the UK as a whole.

The general rule to be considered for city status is that a town should be of local/regional/national prominence and have good, historical connections, including that with royalty. This is one of the reasons why Milton Keynes is still a town despite a population in excess of 210,000, as it was a purpose built town built after WWII, and other sizeable towns are Luton and Northampton with populations of about 190,000.
