V-Ger

Does anybody else here feel like V-Ger from Star Trek the Motion Picture? I've been spending some time trying to get to know this woman at work and I just can't talk on her wavelength no matter how hard I try. This then raises two questions for me:

1. Am I doing something wrong?
2. Is the woman I'm talking to just now my *ahem* type?

If the answer to the second question is yes then I suppose there is hope for me yet. In fact, I tend to suspect that her not being the kind of person I am (interests etc) is contributing to the problem. But if the answer to the first question is also yes then I most certainly need to work on my social skills.

I've been a V-Ger most of my life, it seems, trying to learn new things and rarely spending time talking to people about anything other than politics, religion, philosophy and the like.

I bet if your conversation is mainly about topics (as opposed to more casual stuff, emotional stuff, asking her questions, etc.) then I'd bet you might need a weeeeee bit of work on subject matter.

As for #2, impossible for me to tell.

If you ask questions like that, check she is a Trekker first

Before I was married there was a girl who was interested in me, but I didn't realise. She eventually resorted to grabbing me by the hand and, erm, snogging me. It was rather nice but we were thrown out of the cafe. We went out for a couple of weeks before the novelty mutually wore off.

I've never been able to recognise whether somebody likes me or not romantically... at least not until they've made it utterly obvious. Thankfully, I'm happily married so its not such a handicap any longer.

Regarding my wife, I was interested in her before she became interested in me. I wrote her a riddle to express myself. OK, she initially said 'no', but we had quickly become good friends and I persisted... since the ice of my interest had been broken by my writing the riddle :D

No no, man, I definitely didn't ask her about that. That was more autistic talk than fitting in and mingling with NT talk. But I find the two hard to separate sometimes. So I can sound really normal to autistics and then really weird to NT's.

Yeah the whole eye contact thing always throws me off. I'm afraid to stare people in the eyes because I think they'll think I'm lusting after them or that I've got some kind of problem. It also makes me feel exposed when I stare people in the eyes, like I'm suddenly vulnerable and unable to hide my thoughts. But I still try to do it, especially to try to spot crows feet in the smiles.

That's an interesting idea....

Some people are just more impossible to talk to than others. Neither person having the conversation will be able to think of a SINGLE thing to say, even though both people might be able to converse with others, even with the same other.
Sometimes, also, it is impossible to make people understand what the hell you're talking about, and it is worse with some than others. See the first quote in my signature for an exaggerated example :D

I have been wanting for a while to start my own Starship Kevin. It would be devoted entirely to seeking out new people and new personalities and to boldly going where I've never gone before. Sadly, however, where I've never gone before usually tends to be in the realm of the first steps of most other people. *sigh*
