I believe it just generally is another word for "code", although with a mathematical bent to it.

Noc, (I can call you Noc too, can't I?)
Mostly they spelled cipher. Someone recognized it looks like a standard Ramirez Large Hadron Collider Algorithmic Substitution Cipher.
What the hell is that, and why does it become complicated?
