My Show!

Postby Civet on Fri Apr 20, 2007 1:56 pm

A friend of mine has an art store she opened up in September of last year, and she has some gallery space that she offers as show space for students at her former school and for local artists. She asked me if I'd like to do a show, and I of course said yes.

I hung it last Saturday and the reception was last night, take down is the sunday after this one. The turn out was pretty poor for the reception, unfortunately, though my friend said it's kind of typical. Basically, only some of the people I invited myself showed up, none of the local students or people from the community. It was kind of fun, anyway, though, and I sold two prints to my friends heheh.

I took some photos of the gallery right after we hung everything last weekend... I didn't get any pictures at the reception but one of my friends may have some so I'll ask her about it and see if I can post some of those later.

Anyway, pictures!:

That's very neat, Civet. It's probably just nice to see all of your hard work displayed.

Kewel beans, Civet. :D I've always loved your work (both the watercolor and the stuffed animals). I think that last one is definitely my favorite. The antlers are awesome.

Those are very nice pictures, Civet. I have enjoyed seeing all of your art. It is apparent, even to my untrained eye, that you have talent.

I had a friend, one of few, whose wife became an artist after a nearly fatal accident. I thought her art was interesting, but I believe the method they used to promote her art was the primary reason for her success. People were interested in her story, and the challenges she had to overcome. That often led them to purchase her art.
My friend and his wife sold T-shirts, which were imprinted with her art, at art shows. They made assorted cards from her art. They sold a limited number of signed prints of her art.
They seemed to find a good balance between art as a process of creation and inspiration, and art as a business, and they were quite successful in making a respectable income.

Browsing old posts, as you do, I saw this and (although I wanted to comment on ALL the amazing art I've seen in "The Gallery" forum) I thought the stuffed animals were really interesting.
That's really all - they were interesting and I liked them. :)

I'm impressed by people's artistic ability on here in general though. You wouldn't think they'd be so many talented people in this one place.

I've got one of Civet's stuffed animals. The cat.

Wow, what a lot of work you have done!
I am not very good at judging art either but I think those paintings are really nice, soft colours.

renaeden, hopefully you realise I resurrected a thread of civet's 6 months old - if not, I'm pointing it out now :)

However - there's nothing wrong with revisiting or bringing to attention some amazing work! The blending of colours in the pictures is so beautiful. And I still really like the stuffed animals in photos 6 & 7. What does it say on the little piece of paper on the pedestals? Do the stuffed animals have names?

I didn't realise....

But that is the first time I have looked at this thread, so a good thing you revived it for me!

Thank you, guys :)

You can see better images of my work on my website, if you'd like:

http://www.civetstudios.com

The cards say the name of the piece, my name, and the materials used to make them. The two stuffed animals you're referring to do have names, but their species is what's on the tags.. they are modeled after prehistoric mammals, the Leptictidium is the rodent-like fellow and the other is the Andrewsarchus (who is, surprisingly, most closely related to the horse). The white stuffed animal is a fantasy creature I made up, an Owlcat. The Leptictidium's name is Fred, and the Andrewsarchus' name is Harvey.
