Clearing gestalt cookies from your web browser

Postby lb on Wed Dec 31, 2008 6:28 pm

Hey everyone,

Yesterday I broke the site during an update while trying to fix the site. Very sorry about that. Strangely this problem did not affect me so I didn't even realize it was broken.

Anyone who tried to login while the problem was happening was not able to. Some people were still not able to even after the problem was corrected.

To fix this and be able to login again, cookies for asdgestalt.com need to be removed from any browser that you attempted to login with. In the default theme, this board has a link at the bottom right hand side called 'Delete all board cookies'. Clicking that should fix the problem. I am not sure if other themes show this link in the same place. It is possible that some themes might not show it. Logged out users see the default theme, so it shouldn't be a problem.

If the link does not work, clear your browser cookies manually. In firefox, you can click 'Clear private data' from the Tools menu. Check the 'Cookies' box and uncheck all others unless you want to delete other things too.

To delete only gestalt cookies, click 'Show Cookies...', then search for asdgestalt.com and delete everything that shows up by clicking the 'delete cookie' or 'delete cookies' button. 'delete all cookies' will delete all browser cookies. I forget where the settings are in IE6 and IE7. Anybody have that info handy?

If you are still experiencing problems after trying these things, please contact me by sending email to admin@asdgestalt.com.

Trouble is... I'm back in Gestalt, but everytime I follow an email notification... I get chucked out of Gestalt again :(

Sorry Noc. Does your email program open the link in the same browser you usually use? What browser and email programs are you using. Have you tried clearing the cookies manually? Anyone else having this problem? Sorry so many questions. Makes it easier to diagnose the problem.

I ended up having to manually delete mine. I was getting quite panicked. I only just saw this thread and was convinced I'd been banned or something (although my name was coming up at the bottom every time I attempted to log in, as though I was logged in).

Sorry to Goddess and Sophist for the Myspace messages (you were the only two people I could think to contact who might be able to find out what was wrong) - I couldn't email using the address in the contact thread, and obviously didn't see the address in this thread until now (and tried deleting the cookies manually before I resorted to emailing).

Sorry Benji. Glad you are back in. There is one report of someone getting a theme error after logging in? Is that happening to anyone else?

Welcome back Benji!!!

Although for future problems would it be useful to have a dedicated and suitably named thread in one of the public forums which can be accessed without logging on - and thus people can easily locate any information without getting troubled or worried. After all if people knew where this thread was then it can be referenced quicker.

I should have noticed this thread earlier, to be honest.

Theme error? As in their chosen theme isn't appearing? Since logging in, everything seems normal to me now, but if I do have any problems I'll be sure to post about them so you can work out what's going on.

This particular thread has only been going for the past 2 hours though, so before then it would not have existed for you to find.

I have always used the default theme and not had any issues that I know of.

Yes, but I think I actually messaged both Sophist and Goddess (definitely Sophist) in the last two hours, and attempted to log on using the desktop incase it was something to do with my laptop causing the problems, and all the while this thread did exist.

I use the default theme too and did not have any errors. The error looks like this:

"template->_tpl_load_file(): File ./styles/black_pearl/template/index_body.html does not exist or is empty"

The black pearl theme is the only one with the error. It is disabled until I figure out why.

I started having the same problem as Noc with being logged out when clicking a link in an email. Turned out 3 of the wrong cookies had reappeared. Must have been cached somewhere. My only suggestion is that if the problem returns, try clearing your browser cache and gestalt cookies again. Everything should get all caught up at some point. I will clear the server cache again too.

I was just experimenting with this myself. I clicked on a link in a PM and it logged me out. However, I went straight back in and on the PM page I cleared the cookies and after that there are no problems. So I am with you that they must be cached somewhere and something caused them to reappear. If they do come back I suppose a short term fix would be to manually block the cookie from the browser at the user's end, providing we knew which cookies were the "bad" ones, and thus requiring blocking.

Afraid I couldn't have been of much help. DS is out with friends at the movies (unreachable!) and so it took me FOREVER to figure out how to clear my own dang cookies!!!! LOL

At least you found a way. Anyway, all this talk of cookies is making me hungry.

I wonder if you were doing that around the time I was clearing the server cache. Let me know if it happens again. Shouldn't need to block the cookies. Let me know if it keeps happening. Not happening for me anymore since 2nd purge of server cache.

Yes. IE 7 and Outlook Express.

I've cleaned cookies auto and manual.

I just come on line now... and all my custom settings are erased :( Argh!

EDIT: Fortunately it was only my theme. Now I've got back to the look I like... everything seems to be fixed... I'm no longer returning to the login every time I follow an email link. Hey this computer stuff is fun, eh?
