April 2012; What's happening in your world?

Autism awareness month is here again ;). We've got Easter this month (if you are so inclined) and for the northern hemisphere warming temps!

April is also my wedding anniversary (and Adhocs if I remember correctly!). 18th anniversary, 10 great years ;) j/k

This week is also the end of the 5th marking period for my kids. Only one more 6 weeks to go and DS is officially a senior ;). Dd will head into 8th grade next.

It's also World Autism Awareness Day tomorrow (2nd April).

It's my birthday this month, too. And the anniversary of my diagnosis is also this month.

I like Easter, 'cause eggs are the best form of chocolate.

I'm getting started on my Sherlock Holmes half sleeve tattoo on Tuesday.

Speaking of autism awareness month, Manny was trying to get the city of Louisville to declare itself as an "autism friendly" city. He was told he needed to apply through the Mayor's office. He did so, filled out the appropriate paperwork, and you know what they gave him? I little piece of paper that declares April 1st as the day Louisville is an autism friendly city! LOL. A slight breakdown in communication. Manny had wanted Louisville to generally declare itself as an autism friendly city. Not to declare a single day of the year-- much less April Fool's Day!!!-- as an autism friendly day.

I joked that he only needed to get 364 more such declarations to make up the year. ;)

That would be funny were it not so sad :(. Are they seriously that daft? I'd expect it in TX....

What makes Louisville an autism friendly city, Sophist?

I was recently reading about autism-friendly theater. It sounded really cool! I doubt that the entire city would be doing something similar, though :oldlol:

Benji, what will your tattoo look like? I recently watched the first two seasons of Sherlock and quite enjoyed it. I've only read a bit of Sherlock Holmes stories though I would like to read more.

I came across this cool t-shirt on ThinkGeek: http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-appare ... FTW_1#tabs . I'm slightly frustrated as just last night I ordered a gift for a friend on Think Geek and could have paired these together to save on shipping. Now I am pondering more heavily if I want to get the shirt and pay for shipping.

So far, my tattoo has a violin, pipe, magnifying glass, books (with 221B printed on one of them, because that's where they live), and some chemistry lab bottles with smoke billowing out of them (I wanted to be able to add in some colour, because many of the elements will be quite brown, otherwise).

I'm not decided yet on whether I want to include a deerstalker. It's often commented on that a deerstalker wasn't actually mentioned in the books and thus wasn't worn by Holmes, but I'm pretty sure that Holmes does wear one in at least one of the original illustrations, if I'm seeing it correctly, and I also read that due to the time the stories were written, it would have been likely for Holmes to wear one for travelling.

I definitely want a revolver on the inside of my arm, as part of the half sleeve, though. That's partly as a sort of tribute to Watson, because I feel very appreciative of his role (somewhat like R's role on our relationship; I am not a genius like Holmes, of course, but I do relate to a lot of his behaviours and outlooks, and the relationship between the two in the TV series especially echoes my relationship with R, and due to generally not having very good friendships I quite like that Watson likes Holmes and sees the good in him when others don't (this is even moreso in the programme, where Sherlock is called 'Freak' and looked down on by a lot of people for being different). Also, the revolver is an important 'prop' in the stories - Watson is often called on to bring his revolver along, ready for any trouble. So I want that, definitely, and possibly some more chem lab elements in it, like more bottles and smoke, and maybe a bunsen burner or something. Possibly a skull.

EVERYTHING would have been too much to put in on the first session, though, and if necessary I'll extend the tattoo to become a full sleeve, so that I can include even more things.

Your tattoos sound cool SE!

The dryer repair guy is here. He's been on the phone most of the time to someone who's telling him what to do. Why can't that guy be here? Ugh!

DS has started getting requests for his work from everywhere. He's doing something for one company for no $$ but his name will appear in the credits so he can add it to his resume. Now another company wants him to do some audio work. Plus the stuff he already has rolling! Hopefully he can keep his grades up this last six weeks!

We never see him anymore - when he is home he's in his room working.

Yes, apparently our city has had a Texas moment. :?

I think it's a general declaration which would mean a particular demeanor and willingness towards improving the lives of auties. That could include a dedication of more money towards special education needs, more local programs opening up, etc. I think of Salt Lake City in particular which is an autism-friendly city and they have numerous programs to help special needs kids. Bertrand, Manny's grandson, has gotten to use many of these programs, ones helping him build motility like aqua therapy, intensive physical therapy, etc., and he's also gotten things like hippo therapy, music therapy, and numerous more. The school systems there appear to be quite good and I'm told many people move there specifically to take advantage of those services.

In Manny's mind, a declaration would be a first step, a promise of willingness to start building these kinds of services for our local special needs people. Unfortunately, the Mayor's office sees it rather more like a signed certificate and that's about it.

Civet, that shirt is really awesome. I'd be interested in getting one. I wonder what the sizes are equivalent to. I wonder if I would need a medium? Hmm.

Perhaps I should try with Lubbock ;). We do have the Burkhart center which recently started helping families with children on the spectrum, families move here from all over bc of the services.

So I saw the endo today and my A1c was 8.2!! Yes, it's supposed to be 6, but my previous personal best (in 16 years!) was 9.1 so yeah me

She was very pleased and very positive, so different from my old doc!
