Yep, Miss Pickwickian is the one.

It's outrageous, isn't it?

So NTs who are fussy about food must actually be autistic?

My brother wouldn't even try meat feast pizza until a year or so ago and now it's his favourite food. This should probably be in the other thread, actually... Btw, although it seems pretty well accepted on here and even in my mother and brother's eyes that he has autistic traits and was 'more autistic' when he was younger, he has adapted and grown and so become less autistic (and is now undiagnosable, and diagnosis would serve no purpose for him), so although his food issues could be put down to autism (most of them are sensory - like not liking the textures of food, as well as the fact his habits are hard to break, almost obsessive in a way) he's an example of someone who wouldn't be diagnosed ordinarily... but by someone who was that petty and clueless about autism, could be diagnosed based on the few strong traits he does have.

I think humans in general are pretty food fussy. Kids almost always dislike vegetables, etc. And even many adults today would prefer to live on McDonald's than anything healthy. Our tastebuds naturally seem to draw us to fats and carbs. Of course in times of starvation, that's a good thing.

I don't know about OCD stuff with them though. I think most people prefer at least to have places for each of their sides, with some degree of separation. I don't know if they're quite as picky as we are, but I think a lot of people, autistic or not, are very food picky and food sensitive.

That was my point.

My brother's pickiness does extend beyond most males of his age, though. Plain burgers from McDonalds, for example (which take ages when you order them because they automatically put certain fillings in certain burgers). He has grown out of that, as well, though, since he has to ask for himself when out with his girlfriend or friends, so if he wants a burger he has to either request it plain or just ask for a burger and scrape out the stuff himself. So, basically, being around his friends sort of forces him to try things he ordinarily wouldn't.

For example, he's never even tasted a prawn or any kind of seafood or fish in his life, other than fish fingers (he won't even eat similar frozen fish dishes, and he hasn't actually had fish fingers since he was little I don't think) but his girlfriend is Lithuanian and Catholic and they have a tradition on Christmas Eve where they have lots of different veg and fish dishes set out and he was told he had to try every single one. So, the lad who won't try one bite of pasta bake, one bite of Indian takeaway, or anything other than chicken and chips from the Chinese takeaway, and won't try anything to do with fish or vegetables, or lasagne, or lots of foods that I think he must like (curries for example because he likes spicey flavoured crisps and stuff)... actually tried each of the dishes, even though he didn't like any of them.

When we were little I had the phobia of new food and he'd try anything, but now that's swapped around.

Then again, he is related to you. And you being autistic, I'd be gobsmacked if he didn't have at least some autie traits. :)

I think the most hilarious thing a shrink ever uttered into my ears was when upon my suggesting to her that perhaps I had Asperger's she said - *no you don't. you don't talk funny. People with Asperger's Syndrome speak slow and deliberately. You don't*

I see.
Thanks, Miss Shrink!

Ey there, Sophist 8)--it was cool to meet you and everybody on the 14th!!

Having been through the neuropsych/Mayo Clinic meat grinders I can safely say books, websites and sitting down with other aspies are the only reliable methods of gathering and/or dispensing the right kinds of information about it, at least for me. Now, this doesn't mean others shouldn't take or utilize prescription medications to others if they will remedy more serious cases in people but, for me personally, I came to the realization a little over 10 years ago that I could weather these personal storms without the use of prescription medications or hack medical advice/diagnoses.

Yeah, it was really nice meeting you.

Question: I know I went all pedant and everything about food and recipes and everything. Were you really as interested as you looked? Or just being kind? ;)

Definitely! :D I've got a few listed here in the Chitty Chatty Bang Bang section in our Gestalt Recipes thread. And there's other good recipes from other members too.

If you come next month, I'll write some down for you too that I might not have added here. I usually have 'em all in my head.

Here's the link to the thread: http://asdgestalt.com/viewtopic.php?p=26915#p26915

My previous doctor did not believe in Autism?
That is OK I don't like going to the doctors and he was very much the kind of doctor I wanted

"OK mate what is the problem"

"I I have a head cold, swollen glands, ad a throat infection that is threatening going down to the chest. I need a medical certificate for 2 days off work and a prescription for some antibiotics and compatible cold and flu tablets"

"OK" ***tap, tap, tap (Medical certificate and prescription being down on his computer)*** "Do you want me to take a look at your throat?"

"No not really"

"Right OK just pick up your prescription at the front counter and the medical certificate. Thanks for coming and see you next time"

I think I was diagnosed with AS just by talking to the one that diagnosed Me. He is a Ph.D and used collateral interviews of My Sisters. Plus more tests. But what I rember the most is that He thought I had AS and said it even before all of the testing of Me.
That is My Pearls of Wisdom.
