I just attended IMFAR, which is the international meeting for autism. There were several talks on the new DSM-5 changes, especially given that quite a few of the board members who designed the new criteria were attending the meeting and were able to give their views on some of the accusations.
Some of my concerns were quelled, others still remain and I think, in spite of the committee's best intentions, they won't know whether these changes will causes problems until they're in use out in the communities.
Ed Ritvo raised concerns about changing the criteria which would effect research, changing how we define "autism", which are reasonable concerns. Unfortunately, the committee seemed dismissive. I guess we'll find out...
