Aside from it being an uncomfortable experience, I literally feel like I can't understand what the person is saying anymore without being able to look at the mouth.

This one researcher criticizing that study pointed out that kids with hearing/language problems often read lips a bit even if they can mostly understand by hearing. So maybe you're unconsciously reading lips?

I know that I read lips at least a little and that helps me understand what the person is saying.

Come to think of it, I think most people read lips at least a little bit, even if they don't spend as much time staring at the mouth as some auties might do.

I find that I can't look at someone's mouth at all to understand what they're saying. It completely loses me. Not sure why. Now I just close my eyes if I really need to pay attention, or make eye contact if I have to and do my best to intuit what they're saying to me.

So no reading lips over here. I'm always impressed when I see people who can.

I guess it would be dependent on the level of integration of vision and audition; for those for whom lips aren't too distracting, perhaps I should've said. ;)
