Making a List

Next week I have an appointment with my Psychologist in order to plan strategies for when I go to university in the fall. I am making an itemised list of some accommodations I think I my need (extra time for exams and reading assignments, note taking, a dark quiet room for test taking).

It has been long time since I have in an academic environment. I was wonder if anyone else had suggestions for coping strategies.

Potentially writing in some sort of accommodated breaks if you feel overwhelmed for any reason.

Does going to university mean you also have to find somewhere new to live? Everyone is different in what they find stressful, but the biggest thing that helped me when I went to uni was to have my own living space ie not to have to live in a shared house or student accommodation. The academic side was OK but it was the extra-curricular socialising that led to me dropping out the first time I went. I'm not sure if the university could help in that respect, I certainly had to find a place myself, but it might be worth mentioning if you think it could help.

I have access to a room for people with disabilities to study and use the computer. Hardly anyone goes in there and I can have the lights turned off if I need to.

It is worth looking for computing labs around your uni that are usually quiet when there are no classes in them. I have found two of them to use. I am trying to get myself used to studying with a few people around and also rooms where the lights are on. This is because I know that conditions around me can't be ideal all the time so I may as well do this for times when there is nothing I can do about my surroundings. Then I will be able to handle it a bit better than I would otherwise.
